NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Kelsey Doherty's two runs batted in allowed the Wilmington University softball team to split a nonconference doubleheader with visiting Bloomsburg, 1-3 and 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Asbury Field.

In a tightly contested doubleheader, the Wildcats (8-12 overall) outhit the Huskies (10-5), 9-7, in the first game, but left nine runners on base as Bloomsburg scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to carry them to a victory.

Doherty laced a double off the top of the left field fence to score Shannon McMahon from second for game two's first run before an RBI single back up the middle in the fifth again scored McMahon for the 2-0 lead for the Wildcats.

In the first game, The Huskies got on the board first with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Bloomsburg put its first two runners on base with a leadoff single and a double over the head of Meghan Logullo in center, chasing starting pitcher Chelsea Botsch from the circle.

Now with one out, the Huskies executed a squeeze bunt to get on the board before a bases loaded walk with two outs gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the fourth. After the Wildcats left two runners on base in the home half of the fourth, the Huskies added to their leas with a single run in the fifth.

Wilmington again left two runners on base in the fifth before finally breaking through with a run in the sixth inning. Jen Fischbach started the rally with a double to left center before Ashley Bennett put two runners on with a single into center field. Now with two outs, McMahon slapped one through the hole on the left side, allowing Fischbach to trot home and cut the deficit to 3-1. But a hard ground ball by Botsch was corralled by the third baseman, as she stepped on third for the final out of the inning.

In the nightcap, it was the Doherty and Stephanie Sarris show, as Doherty went 2-for-3 with both runs batted in and Sarris tossed a complete game shutout.

The scoring started in the third after McMahon led off the inning by reaching on an error. Now standing on second, Doherty smashed a liner off the left field fence, allowing McMahon to score without a throw.

Now in the fifth, McMahon again reached on an error with one out, before reaching second on a sacrifice bunt from Cambria Ziemba. Even with facing a new pitcher, Doherty greeted her with an RBI single back up the middle, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Sarris, as stranded a runner on first in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out the shutout.

Botsch struck out two but allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the loss in game one. Sarris improved to 3-3 overall with the team's first shutout of the 2014 season, striking out two while allowing five hits.

The Wildcats return to action and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday, as they host rival Holy Family for an afternoon doubleheader at Asbury Field starting at 2:30 p.m.
