Brian August Wins 300th Career Game as No. 20 Wilmington Baseball Sweeps Bloomfield

NEWARK, N.J. - - The 20th ranked Wilmington University baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep of Bloomfield, 16-0 and 9-6, to earn 10th year head coach Brian August his 300th career victory on Saturday afternoon at Westside Park.

The two wins puts the only head coach in the NCAA era for the Wildcats at 300-187-2 overall, good enough for a .613 win percentage through his 10 seasons at the helm of the team. He came into this season ranked 40th in winning percentage among active head coaches with a minimum of five year as an NCAA Division II head coach.

The Wildcats (23-4-1, 12-2 CACC) got their money's worth in the doubleheader, collecting 28 hits, 25 runs, including a pair of home runs from Mike Annone, and another by Sam Goines.

In the opener, the Wildcats scored in all but three innings while scoring four runs in three separate frames. Joe Marciano started the 16 run outburst by knocking in the first two, hitting an RBI double in the first and adding an RBI single in the third.

Annone hit the first of his two homers for the third run of the fifth inning before capping the scoring with a three-run dinger in the top of the ninth, finishing the scoring for the Wildcats in the first game.

Frank Samluk, Josh Hampton, Marciano, Annone, Matt Lopes (two), and Mike Jerminski all collected double in the first game for the Wildcats. Hampton, Annone, and Lopes each collected three hits for the game, while Samluk, and Marciano finished with two hits each.

Jamie Treml improved to 6-0 on the mound for the year, tossing the first six innings of shutout ball before turning it over to the bullpen. Treml struck out six while only walking one and giving up three hits. Tyler Newton tossed a scoreless seventh followed by Chris Lopez' perfect eighth inning. Peter Monahan finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth frame for the Wildcats.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats jumped out to another 8-0 lead after six times to the plate before holding on down the stretch for the CACC doubleheader sweep.

The scoring started in the top of the second, as Jerminski started the inning with a lead off single. Goines followed with his second homer of the season, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Annone continued his hot day at the plate in the second game, hitting a two-run triple in the third inning before coming home to score another run on a Goines double, giving the Wildcats an early 5-0 lead.

With two outs in the sixth, Annone knocked in another pair of runs with an RBI single, scoring both Marciano and Hampton.

Jay Kluka improved to 2-1 on the season in pitching the first six innings of game two. HE struck out five batters while only walking one before turning it over to the bullpen. Nick Marics, Tyler Fries, and Jarrett Shaffer closed out the contest to allow August to win his 300th game at Wilmington University.

Mike Annone batted 5-for-8 with two home runs, a triple, a double, nine RBI, and three runs score for the doubleheader.

The Wildcats went 7-0 this week, 6-0 in the CACC after sweeping Post, Concordia, and Bloomfield. The team will now travel to Felician for another CACC makeup doubleheader on Monday, April 14. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
