Wildcats Explode Early To Take 15-4 Nonconference Baseball Contest at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - - Jamie Treml continues his tremendous comeback season in 2014, again striking out 11 batters as the Wilmington University baseball team exploded early before going to a 15-4 win at Kutztown on Thursday afternoon at North Campus Field.

In his ninth appearance of the season, Treml improved to 8-0 on the year, throwing six innings while striking out 11 batters. It is the second straight start the lefty has struck out 11 batters, as he punched out 11 in six innings against USciences. He also only allowed two hits and three walks, giving up an unearned run to drop his season earned run average even lower to a minute 0.79.

The Wildcats' (29-7-1 overall) bats helped Treml out from the very start, putting four on the board in the top of the first and adding another seven runs in the top of the third.

The offense put three of the first four batters on base, loading the bases and putting the team in motion early on. Now with two outs in the inning, Sam Goines smacked his second grand slam of the season, putting a quick four runs on the board for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats then used four Kutztown (23-18 overall) errors to go along with three hits to score seven runs in the top of the third. Joe Marciano started the scoring with a bases loaded RBI single to the pitcher before a two out error kept the inning alive. A throwing error by the shortstop pushed two more runs across before Josh Swirchak singled in another run for the Wildcats. A pair of errors allowed two more runs to score before a bases loaded walk to Jon Castro brought the seventh run to the plate for the visitors.

Treml shut the Golden Bears down in order in the fourth and fifth innings before facing four batters in the sixth and final inning of the day for the junior.

Kyle Lindstrom collected an RBI on an sacrifice fly in the seventh while Tyler Hawthorne, Tory Manfre, and Christian Adorno picked up RBIs in the top of the ninth to round out the Wilmington scoring.

Swirchak added to his team leading batting average with a 3-for-4 day, now hitting .400 for the season. Matt Lopes also collected two hits, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Adorno batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to round out the Wildcats with multiple hits on the afternoon. The Wildcats received hits from 12 different players on the roster.

Jarrett Shaffer struck out a batter in his seventh inning of work before Tim Racek struck out the side while allowing a run on two hits in the eighth. Ryan Douglas finished out the victory with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Wildcats will take Friday off before returning to action on Saturday, as they host Dominican in an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Wilson Field. Saturday is also Senior Day for six individuals as Josh Hampton, Kyle Lindstrom, Joe Marciano, Nick Marics, Jarrett Shaffer, and Tim Racek will be honored after the games. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
