Wilmington Baseball Moves Atop CACC Standings with 2-0 Win over USciences

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The No. 20 Wilmington University baseball team collected 11 hits but only managed two runs on a blustery afternoon at Wilson Field, using Rob Gore's arm to carry the team to 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over USciences.

Gore tossed seven strong innings with three strikeouts, only allowing four hits while not giving up a run for the Wildcats (28-7-1, 15-3 CACC). USciences (5-30, 3-15 CACC) received a strong outing from starter T.J. Maiorino as he struck out four but allowed two runs (one earned) over 7.0+ innings in the loss.

It seemed as though the Wildcats were going to jump out to a large lead in the first inning, as they received singles from Josh Swirchak and Frank Samluk to start the inning. With runners on first and third, Josh Hampton legged out a grounder to second base to pick up the RBI as the Devils attempted to turn the double play.

Again with two runners on in the first, Maiorino induced Mike Annone into a grounder to first base to end the inning and the threat for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats left at least one runner on in every inning but the fifth, including a pair of runners in the fourth, sixth, and seventh frames.

An insurance run came in the bottom of the seventh, however, as Swirchak, the CACC's leader hitting, doubled inside the third base bag to start the inning. Attempting to sacrifice him over to third, Samluk reached as Maiorino threw the bunted ball away from first base, allowing Swirchak to come home.

Still in trouble, Maiorino induced three ground ball outs to work his out of the inning, leaving runners at the corners.

After tossing back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh frames, Gore was replaced by Nick Marics to start the top of the eighth. Marics earned two strikeouts on his way to a third straight 1-2-3 inning for the Wildcats.

Tyler Fries came on for the save opportunity in the ninth inning, again setting the Devils down in order for his fifth save of the season.

Gore improved to 5-0 on the year, lowering his season earned run average to a minute 1.79 in 45.1 innings.

Brody Tennant led the Wildcats with three hits while Swirchak, Samluk, and Jon Castro each added two hits. Mike Jerminski and Sam Goines added hits to round out the 11 for the team.

Wilmington continues its busy week with another contest on Thursday, making up a game at Kutztown. The single, nine-inning game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
