NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Sophomore defensemen John Greene was up to his old tricks in the 2022 season opener and was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday.

John Greene (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) helped lead the Wildcats to their most impressive win since the program was formed in 2018. The Wildcats defeated Chowan, 26-4, on Saturday, setting a new record for goals in a game, scoring margin, and shots in a game.

Greene led the Wildcats defensively, only allowing Chowan to get off 26 shots to the Wildcats 69. He also led the defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls against the Hawks. The First Team All-CACC performer last year led the team in caused turnovers.

The defensemen also got in on the scoring act on Saturday, picking up a ground ball carrying it into the offensive end, and dishing a pass off to Keeshawn Bell for the 5-1 lead. He then got in the scoring act as well, scooping up a ground ball on the defensive side of the field and carrying the distance, and beating the goalkeeper for the 14-3 lead with his first goal of the season.

The Wildcats will look to carry the momentum of Saturday's game into their next contest, as they welcome nationally ranked No. 5 Mercy to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon. The opening face-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
