TOWSON, Md. - - Continuing her trend of becoming the first Wilmington University student-athlete to be named a Capital One Academic All-American a season ago, junior softball pitcher Katie Warrington one-upped herself as she was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II Softball Second Team on Tuesday, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Warrington (Townsend, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) moved up to second team this season after being the first Wildcat to earn Academic All-American as a third team member in 2011. She leads the Capital One Capital One Academic All-America Division II second team with her success on and off the diamond.
The junior carries a 4.0 grade point average while studying sports management at Wilmington. She was a Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society inductee and a Wilmington Academic All-Star this past year at the annual Wilmington University Academic Awards Night in February. Last season, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Third Team as well as the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.
Warrington the 2011 CACC Pitcher of the Year, earned first team honors for the second consecutive season after striking out a league best 185 batters in 140.2 innings of work. The junior went 13-8 but only losing three times in her final 17 appearances, a span that began on March 6. She finished second in earned run average, finishing the regular season with a 1.16 ERA.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011012 D-II Academic All-America teams program.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
