NEW CASTLE, Del. - - After helping the team to a record number of conference wins, two standout Wilmington University softball student-athletes were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District One Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
First Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference members for their play on the field, Katie Warrington and Shelby Thompson also showed off their skill in the class room this past year as they were honored by CoSIDA on the Academic All-District One First Team.
Warrington carries a 4.0 grade point average while studying sports management at Wilmington. She was a Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society inductee and a Wilmington Academic All-Star this past year at the annual Wilmington University Academic Awards Night in February. Last season, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Third Team as well as the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.
Warrington (Townsend, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy), the 2011 CACC Pitcher of the Year, earned first team honors for the second consecutive season after striking out a league best 185 batters in 140.2 innings of work. The junior went 13-8 but only losing three times in her final 17 appearances, a span that began on March 6. She finished second in earned run average, finishing the regular season with a 1.16 ERA.
Thompson carries a 3.56 GPA while studying Psychology at Wilmington. She was honored as a Wilmington Academic All-Star this past year at the annual Wilmington University Academic Awards Night in February.
Thompson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) came to Wilmington this season from Del Tech and immediately earned her keep atop of the lineup. She started the season with four straight (and five out of the first six) multi-hit games, finishing the year with a team best 19 in the regular season. The left handed slap-hitter led the Wildcats with a .341 batting average and 60 hits. She also scored a team best 27 runs and stole 19 bases on 21 attempts.
The Academic All‐District teams include the student‐athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All‐America program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and doubles the number of scholar‐athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two‐year schools.
First‐team Academic All‐District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America Team ballot, where first, second and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.
