NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Five more student-athletes were highlighted in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Reports for the Wilmington University baseball, lacrosse and softball teams, but Liz Case is the grand winner by being named the CACC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Case (Perry Hall, Md.) picked up her first CACC Player of the Week honor in her career while freshman Ashley Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) was named to the CACC Honorable Mention. Softball's Katie Warrington (Townsend, Md.) and Christin Headley (Georgetown, Del.) made their way to the CACC Honorable mention as well, as did baseball's BJ Janney (Elkton, Md.), all for their stellar work on the field last week.
The lacrosse squad went 2-0 last week, moving into third place in the CACC standings, led offensively by Case. The junior scored eight goals and added five assists in victories over Chestnut Hill and Post. Her week started with a career high six goals against Chestnut Hill, including the game-tying goal with 2:20 left in regulation and again in overtime with 2:30 to play. She also added two assists against the Griffins. She concluded her week with two goals and three assists against Post on Saturday, picking up four ground balls and causing five turnovers in the 20-7 win.
Including yesterday's tough loss to Philadelphia, Case has scored 34 goals and is third in the CACC with 26 assists. Altogether, she is now second in the conference with 60 total points.
Case is the first Wildcat lacrosse player to earn the CACC Player of the Week award since Mary Sing won the honor on March 8, 2010, and is only the second Wilmington athlete to earn the award since the CACC integrated lacrosse into the conference in 2009.
Kroll also had a hand in the Wildcats' 2-0 week last week, tallying five goals and two assists last week. The freshman capped the week by leading the Wildcats with four goals and two assists against Post. She also went 2-for-4 on eight-meter opportunities against Eagles. The Honorable Mention honor is also Kroll's first weekly distinction of the season.
After capturing the CACC Pitcher of the Week the three previous voting periods, Warrington has to settle for the honorable mention title this week. She continued to impress however, going 3-0 and averaging 11 strikeouts per seven innings in three appearances. She set a new season mark with 13 strikeouts against USciences, throwing her sixth shutout of the season. The junior only allowed four walks and six earned runs on the week, finishing with a 2.00 ERA.
Headley paced the Wildcat offense last week, hitting .579 with 11 hits in 19 at-bats, leading the team to a 4-2 CACC week. The sophomore tallied at least one hit in five of the six games and collected multiple hit games in four of them. Headley knocked in six runs while scoring an additional six on her own. She smashed three doubles and a home run, finishing the week with a .619 on-base percentage and a .895 slugging percentage. It is the first time in her career being named on the CACC Weekly Report.
Janney shot his way up the batting average leader board last week, batting 12-for-23 while helping the Wildcat baseball team to a 4-1 record. All 12 of his hits were singles, but he helped himself by going 6-for-6 in stolen bases and scored four runs for the week. The junior hit safely in all five games, extending his season long hitting streak to 13 consecutive games through Saturday. The streak would reach a team best 15 games before ending yesterday against West Chester. He highlighted his week with a 4-for-6 performance in game one against Concordia and now has both four-hit games for the Wildcats this season. It is the first time this season Janney has been named to the CACC Honorable Mention list.
All three teams are in the midst of a CACC playoff run, as Softball has already clinched a playoff spot, and baseball and lacrosse are still in the hunt with three or less games remaining in the regular season.
Softball has a third-place showdown with Georgian Court on Thursday before closing its regular season on the road at Nyack on Saturday.
Lacrosse is tied with two other teams in third place and will square off against one of them, Dominican on Saturday. They also play CACC leading Holy Family tomorrow, Thursday, and end the regular season with a night game at Chestnut Hill next Wednesday.
Baseball is also sitting in third place right now with three games remaining. The team is off from CACC action until next Sunday at Caldwell and will close out the regular season at Philadelphia in a single, 9-inning contest on March 2.
