Fast Start Gives Millersville 18-5 Women’s Lacrosse Victory over Wilmington University

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - A fast start for Millersville University led to an 18-5 victory over Wilmington University in nonconference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Marauders (1-0) opened their season in fine fashion, putting the first 10 goals on the board on their way to a 13-1 halftime lead. The second half was more closely combatted between the two programs, with Millersville coming out on top, 5-4, to come to the final score.

Wilmington (0-4) outshot the Marauders in the second half, 17-7, bringing the final to within one shot, 25-24, in favor of the home team. The Wildcats picked up more ground balls, 13-12, than the Marauders, while going a perfect 9-for-9 on clear attempts. Millersville held the slight advantage on draw controls, 13-11, for the game but the Wildcats controlled more, 6-4, in the second half.

Sophomore Megan Keffer led the Wildcats offensively, scoring a pair of goals on six shots while picking up three ground balls and collecting six draws. Ashley Kroll, Chelsie Maher and Brittany Rhodes scored the other three goals for the visitors on Tuesday. Rebekah McCurry and Maher also recorded assists for the Wildcats. Jaclyn Hall, Alison Kern and Penelope Fantis picked up two ground balls a piece for Wilmington.

Kaitlyn Hall played all 60 minutes in goal for the Wildcats, making five stops on 25 Millersville shots in the game. Lauren Mateja recorded 11 saves in cage for the Marauders in the win.

The Wildcats remain on the road for their next two contests, as they head to Arundel Community College for a play weekend with Queens (N.C.) and Pfeiffer. Wilmington will play Queens (N.C.) first on Saturday at noon.
