Frostburg State Beats the Buzzer in Double OT, 11-10, Over Women’s Lacrosse

FROSTBURG, Md. - - A goal with 0.2 seconds remaining in double overtime gave Frostburg State the walk-off victory, 11-10, against the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

The Wildcats (5-2) had seven shots in the overtime periods, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Katie Vindigni made a save with 18 seconds left in the double overtime session, but a failed clear resulted in the Bobcats getting the ball back, scoring on the odd man rush with less than a second on the clock.

The evenly matched game was within three goals the entire match. Back-to-back goals from Amelie Gamache gave the visitors a 2-1 lead but then Frostburg State scored three of the final four goals of the first quarter to take a 4-3 lead.

Frost Burt started the second quarter with a. goal, but then the Wildcats scored the final three goals of the half starting with 5:46 to play in the quarter. Ella Royer scored her first of the game before Riley McQuaide tied the match, 5-5, with 4:26 to play. Makenzie Stritzinger scored with 1:34 left to put the Wildcafts ahead, 6-5, going into the halftime break.

The run continued into the third quarter, as Amelie Gamache and Ella Royer scored to extend the largest lead of the game, 8-5, with 9:48 to play. But Frostburg didn't roll over, as they responded with the final four goals of the third quarter, taking a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

Makenzie Stritzinger and Ella Royer scored two quick goals to start the fourth quarter, as Royer's third goal gave the Wildcats a 10-9 lead with 13:23 left in regulation. Frostburg eventually tied the game with 5:55 showing on the clock. Katie Vindigni had four saves after the last goal, including a save with 16 seconds left and a free position save with nine seconds on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

Makenzie Stritzinger and Amelie Gamache missed the cage early in the first overtime Katie Vindigni made three stops in the final 2:32, the last leading to a last second attempt by Stritzinger, but her shot was stopped with :08 on the clock, sending the game into a second overtime.

Gamache and Stritzinger missed the cage again in the second overtime and a shot from Ella Royer was saved with 1:33 to play. The ensuing clear attempt was obtained by Frostburg State, setting up the final sequence for the game-winning goal.

Makenzie Stritzinger scored three goals and added two assists, with her first goal of the season being her 100th of her career, while Ella Royer scored three goals and added an assist, eight draws, and four ground balls. Amelie Gamache scored three goals to go with five draws, and four ground balls. Zorah Perry had five caused turnovers while Caitlyn Welker had five ground balls. Katie Vindigni finished with 21 saves in the loss.

The Wildcats return home for their next two contest, starting with a nonconference matchup with D'Youville on Thursday. The opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
