NEWARK, Del. - - A second half scoring spree sent the Wilmington University women's soccer team past Bloomfield, 6-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon at the new WU Athletics Complex for the first annual Wilmington University Homecoming Weekend.
Wilmington (3-3-1, 3-0 CACC) remained unbeaten in the CACC and started 3-0 for the first time since the 2010 season. It is the fourth time since joining the NCAA ranks in 2004 the Wildcats started 3-0 in the CACC. Bloomfield (1-2, 1-1 CACC) dropped it first conference match of the season after starting with a 1-0 victory over Goldey-Beacom.
Dominating the match from start to finish, the Wildcats could only put two on the board in the first half despite taking 15 shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Senior Brittany Rhodes got the scoring starting in the 6th minute of action, capitalizing on a misclear by the Bloomfield defense. Off a free kick taken by Vikki Zipf, the ball bounced around inside the 18-yard box before settling on the foot of Rhodes just outside the penalty area. With the goalie out, she was able to slide the ball home in the open goal for the 1-0 lead.
Morgan Fraczkowski scored the first of her two goals in the 31st minute, using her height advantage off a corner kick opportunity. Chelsea Grace sent the ball in off the corner and found Fraczkowski who rose above her defender and headed it home for the 2-0 lead.
Fraczkowski wasn't done for the day however, as she opened the second half scoring spree for the Wildcats with her second goal of the match. Again using her head, Fraczkowski redirected a perfect ball off a free kick by Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins at the near post, flicking it by the goalie as it slid in by the far post for the 3-0 lead in the 64th minute.
The Wildcats started to pour it on late in the second half, denying any threat of a Bloomfield comeback. Victoria Vasapolli took the game into her own hands after the 80th minute, scoring two quick goals in a matter of two minutes. Her team leading fourth goal came as she curved a left footed corner passed the Deacon keeper and into the back of the net in 9:51 remaining. It was the second of such goals for Vasapolli this season.
The sophomore made it 5-0 two minutes later on a break-a-way with the keeper as senior Jenna Quaranta played a perfect through ball down the middle to free Vasapolli.
Quaranta took matters into her own hands in the final minute of play, this time receiving a perfect through ball to be in on the keeper all alone. Quaranta juked left, getting the keeper on the ground and slid the ball into the net before the defense caught up to her. Hoesli-Atkins picked up her second assist for the day on the play.
Wilmington outshot Bloomfield 29-7 for the match, 17 of which were on frame. The Wildcats also earned a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks for the match.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Walters needed to make three saves to pick up her second shutout of the season. Deacon goalkeeper Sashagay Spence recorded 11 saves in all 90 minutes of action.
The Wildcats remain in the CACC this week as they return to action on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex against Philadelphia. The CACC match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
