Troy Donato and Women’s Tennis Earns First Win of 2019 Season, 4-3, over Dominican

WILMINGTON, Del. - - First year head coach Troy Donato earned his first collegiate coaching career as the Wilmington University women's tennis team defeated Dominican, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in the team's 2019 home opener at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

Playing on the resurfaced and new look Delcastle Tennis Center, the Wildcats (1-3, 1-2 CACC) picked up their first win of the season by winning the doubles point and then claiming three singles points. Dominican (2-4, 1-2 CACC) is a new program, competing in their first season.

The Wildcats were able to jump out on top of the Chargers with a pair of wins in doubles, with No. 2 doubles needing to go to a tiebreaker to determine who would earn the overall point.

Laura Gil and Sabrina Blasi-Smith gave the Wildcats a chance with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, and then Andrea Ribalta and Mallory Nolte secured the doubles point with a 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats earned the match with a 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker.

Laura Gil then gave the Wildcats their second point of the afternoon at No. 1 singles, defeating Paula Gutierrez, 6-1 and 6-2. Dominican got on the board with a win at No. 4 singles, but then the Wildcats took the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Andrea Ribalta improved to 4-0 in dual matches with a 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3 victory at number two singles, and then the match came down to number three singles.

Sabrina Blasi-Smith took the first set, 6-2, but then Joana Ndunduma evened the match with a second set win, 6-3. Blasi-Smith regrouped and won the third set, 6-4, to claim the victory, 4-3.

The Wildcats return to the court Sunday afternoon, as they host UDC at the Delcastle Tennis Center. First served is set for 2:30 p.m.
