Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight Regional Match, Beating Adelphi, 5-2

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University tennis team won back-to-back regional matches on back-to-back days, defeating Adelphi, 5-2, on Sunday on the road at the Adelphi Tennis Courts.

As they have all season long, the Wildcats (14-2) won the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. The Panthers (10-5) made things interesting in the singles matches, The Wildcats then won four of the six singles matches, winning two of the first four matches to close to withing 3-2. But the Wildcats closed out the victory with wins at No. 6 and No. 5 to win the match, 5-2.

Marley Trifunovic and Valentina Ivankovic started the doubles match with a win at No. 3, 6-2, and then Jess Purdy and Neus Ramos Moreno gave the Wildcats the doubles' point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan closed out the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

Valentina Ivankovic continues to impress in singles matches, being the first to finish at No. 3. She won 6-2 and 6-1 to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. But the Panthers took the match at No. 1 singles to cut the lead in half before Jess Purdy won at No. 2 singles, 7-5 and 6-2, for the 3-1 lead.

But the Panthers didn't go away, winning at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, and 10-7, to keep the match going, 3-2. But Larize Nel made short work of her opponent at No. 6 singles, winning the match, 6-3 and 6-1, for the team's fourth point, 4-2. Marley Trifunovic finished off the Panthers with another win at No. 5 singles, winning 7-5 and 6-4, to close out the match, 5-2.

The Wildcats have three remaining matches to prepare for the NCAA Regionals. The final stretch of the season starts on Thursday when they host Jefferson at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
