Women’s Tennis Takes Care of Post, 6-1

MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team traveled to Connecticut or a matinee contest and came home with a 6-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Post on Friday at the Edgewood Bath and Tennis.

It is the 18th straight regular season conference win for the Wildcats, winners of the past two CACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

On Friday, the Wildcats won all three doubles matches to earn the point. Larize Nel and Kushi Khandoji was the first to finish, winning at No. 3 doubles, 6-0. Jess Purdy and Valentina Ivankovic gave the Wildcats the point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Fenna Swaan and Gloria Barcaro needed to work for the sweep but pulled off the 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 2 doubles.

CACC Women's Tennis Player of the Annunciata De-Souza tied the match for the Eagles as singles play got started, winning at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-2. But after that, it was all Wilmington.

Alva Norberg gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a win at No. 4 singles, 7-5 and 6-2, and then Marley Trifunovic made it 3-1 with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-3 and 6-3. Valentina Ivankovic solidified the team victory at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.

Playing in her first dual match singles competition of the year, Jess Purdy kept the momentum going in favor of the Wildcats with a win at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-3. Fenna Swaan rounded out the 6-1 victory with her own win at No. 6 singles, 6-2 and 6-1.

The Wildcats run through the CACC continues with its next match on Monday when they head to Jefferson. The Wildcats and Rams squared off in the last two CACC Tournament Championships and the Wildcats went 4-0 against the Rams last season. The first serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
