MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team rounded out the opening weekend Marauder Clash Tournament with a victory over West Chester, 3-2, in the bracket play round on Saturday. The Wildcats finished the day 1-2, and came home with a 3-2 overall record for the weekend.

Set scores against West Chester were 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 18-25 and 15-12.

Leading the way offensive for the Wildcats was senior Nicole Wiechecki and freshman Kaitlin DiGiacinto. Wiechecki finished the match with a team best 15 kills on 35 swings while DiGiacinto ended with 14 terminations on 40 swings. DiGiacinto also collected a team best four service aces and added a block assist for a team high 18.5 points for the match.

Sophomore setter Kasey Couch dished out 24 assists while freshman Alex Siolos chipped in with 17 helpers. The two setters helped run an offense that collected 55 kills and a .263 attack percentage.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by five separate individuals who picked up at least five digs a piece. Siolos led the way with seven, followed by Annie Scarfo and Wiechecki with six each, and Couch and DiGiacinto with five each.

Brittany Biddle held the defensive front at the net, swatting away three solo blocks and adding three block assists. Katie Shorter picked up six block assists in the win while Brooke Foskey and Wiechecki added four block-assists each.

Earlier in on Saturday, the Wildcats dropped a pair of close contests, falling to Quincy, 3-1, to start the day and dropping a five-setter to Concord in the early afternoon.

Set scores against Quincy were 25-14, 20-25, 21-25, and 23-25.

In the early contest against Quincy, Wiechecki again led the offensive attack, picking up 13 kills while only committing one error on 25 attempts for a .480 attack percentage.

Other notable numbers for the match against Quincy were the 11.5 total team blocks. Shorter, Biddle and DiGiacinto led the defensive unit up front with two solo blocks a piece. Shorter added three block assists while Biddle and DiGiacinto contributed two each.

During the second match of the day against Concord, the middle blockers came out in a huge way. Biddle checked in with one solo block, but aided on 10 block assists and chipped in five kills for 11 points. Foskey added seven block assists off the bench while Siolos contributed five block assists and Shorter ended with one solo and two assists.

Again it was Wiechecki on the pins doing the most damage, finishing the Concord match with a team high 17 kills. She picked up the double-double by getting to 15 digs, and also contributed behind the line with five service aces. She collected a total of 22 points in the five-setter.

The Wildcats have a short rest following the five matches in two days as they return to the court on Wednesday for their home opener. Wilmington will square off against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division rival Holy Family to open the new Wilmington University Athletics Complex court starting at 7 p.m. Holy Family was selected to repeat as South Division champions with Wilmington selected second in the 2012 CACC Volleyball Preseason Poll
