NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University continued its early run of success on Saturday afternoon, capping the Wilmington Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record, defeating Bentley and Davis & Elkins on its home floor at the WU Athletics Complex, making it six consecutive victories.

Playing in front of their home crowd all weekend, Wilmington (8-2 overall) dropped one set for the tournament, hitting a combined .219 (180-73-488) attack percentage with a powerful 37 total blocks for the four match tournament. Overall, the Wildcats went 5-0 for the week, opening with a four set victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Holy Family on Wednesday.

Set scores against Bentley were 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, and 25-16.

Set scores against Davis & Elkins were 25-17, 25-19, and 25-23.

The offense showed up to play in the first match on Saturday against Bentley, as the team knocked down 55 kills on only 113 swings for a combined .310 hitting accuracy. Setters Alex Siolos and Kasey Couch each had over 20 assists in running the offense, dishing it out to seven separate hitters who came down with at least two kills.

Freshman Kaitlin DiGiacinto and senior Nicole Wiechecki led the match with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, finishing as the only duo with double digit terminations for the match. Siolos and junior Katie Shorter collected eight kills while senior Brooke Foskey picked up six, junior Brittany Biddle finished with five, and freshman Shelby Henderson added two kills.

The team dropped its lone set of the tournament to open the match against Bentley, but turned the offense up from the second set on to cruise to the four set victory. With only hitting .125 in the first set, the Wildcat came back to hit .406 (18-5-32) in the second, .333 (12-4-24) in the third, and .400 (14-4-25) in the fourth and final game.

The Bentley matchup also produced the most balanced match for the Wildcats in the Invitational, as their front line came up with 13 total blocks, a team high for the tournament. Shorter dominated the net once again, collecting three solo blocks and adding four block assists en route to 13 total points for the match. Fellow middle hitter Biddle picked up one solo block but was there for five block assists while Foskey added four block assists off the bench.

The Wildcats rounded out their Wildcat Invitational with a sweep of Davis & Elkins in the final match. Couch and Siolos spread the offense around as six players ended with kills, but not one player ended in double figures. DiGiacinto and Siolos led the way with nine kills each while Foskey had a season best eight kills with a .412 attack percentage. Shorter picked up seven kills on a .385 percentage while Biddle and Wiechecki rounded out the offense with six kills each.

Siolos continued her all-around game, capping the tournament with nine kills on 19 swings with only one error for a team high .421 hitting percentage. She also collected 19 assists and 10 digs, and helping with two block assists and an ace for a team best 11 points.

Although the blocking numbers were not what the Wildcats have been used to so far this season, the defense still came up large as five players picked up double digit digs in the sweep. Led by DiGiacinto's 15 digs, the Wildcats had 76 digs to Davis & Elkins 71, giving the offense a chance to produce. Wiechecki collected 14 digs followed by Couch with 13, and Siolos and Annie Scarfo with 10 apiece. Henderson was one off the pace and ended with nine digs.

Along with Wilmington's perfect record for the weekend, Indiana (Pa.) also went 4-0 in their matches, improving to 7-1 overall on the young season.

Follow an impressive tournament that witness the freshman knock down 31 kills and only five errors on 67 attempts for a .388 attack percentage while dishing out 80 assists, adding seven aces, 34 digs and 10 block assists, Siolos was named to the Wildcat Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Joining Siolos on the All-Tournament team was IUP's freshman Sarah Smiley, University of the Sciences sophomore Amanda DeAngelo, Concord's sophomore Sarah Jones, Pace's Senior Elyse Rowland, Davis & Elkins' Senior Heather Zapf, West Chester's sophomore Cara Reese, The College of Saint Rose's sophomore Katy Daniels, Bentley's sophomore Kelsey Buckner, and Kutztown's senior Brittany Harman.

Wilmington will get two days off before returning to the hard wood on Tuesday, September 11. The Wildcats also return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday against Chestnut Hill. They will look to improve to 2-0 in the conference and make it six straight victories inside the new WU Athletics Complex. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
