Seven-Match Win Streak Snapped as Volleyball Falls to California (Pa.), 3-0, at Bentley Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team had its seven-match  win streak snapped on Friday as the Wildcats fell 3-0 to California (Pa.) in the first match of the Bentley Invitational.

Set scores for the match were 13-25, 20-25, and 19-25.

Wilmington (10-3 overall) came into the Bentley Invitational winners of its last seven contests, including two matches in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and a perfect 4-0 record in its own Wildcat Invitational last weekend.

Leading the Wildcats against PSAC foe California (Pa.) was senior Nicole Wiechecki with nine kills on 24 swings, adding two aces and nine digs, all team highs, in the loss. Seven separate Wildcats ended with a kill, as Kaitlin DiGiacinto tallied seven, and Katie Shorter picked up six. Shorter connected on six terminations on nine swings, with only one error for a team leading .556 attack percentage on the night.

Kasey Couch dished out 12 assists while freshman Alex Siolos added seven in running the offense.

Defensively, Wiechecki had a team high nine digs, while Siolos collected seven, and DiGiacinto and Couch added six. Overall, eight Wildcats helped on the defensive front, with each player getting to at least one ball on the back line.

Shorter led the effort at the net, picking up the lone solo block of the match for the Wildcats while adding a block assist. Brittany Biddle teamed up with Siolos for two block assists each while Brooke Foskey added one block assist.

Overall as a team, the Wildcats hit .200 (31-13-90) for the match, but needed to recover after a .060 effort in the first set. They were never able to fully recover.

The Wildcats remain at the Bentley Invitational for two more matches on Saturday, as they square off against Queens (N.Y) at 10 a.m. and battle Stonehill starting at 1 p.m.
