NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team regrouped to win the nightcap of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Dominican, falling, 16-7, in the opener before winning game two, 10-7, on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
GAME 1:
Leading 7-4 after six complete innings, Dominican (7-17, 2-2 CACC) scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh to steal a victory away from the Wildcats (12-10, 1-3 CACC).
Six errors led to 12 unearned runs for the Chargers, starting with a two-out error in the top of the third to put the Chargers on the board. Brandon Grygo answered with a two-out RBI triple to right field in the home half of the third, tying the game, 1-1.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, as Tyler Pirrung blooped a two-run single into right and the Garrett Quinn added a third run with an RBI groundout, as the Wildcats took a 4-1 lead.
The Chargers answered with two runs in the fifth and a tying run in the sixth, but the Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
With runners on second and third and no outs, Tyler Pirrung doubled down the left field line for two more RBI before he came home on a first and third play to make it 7-4 going in to the final frame.
A single, error, and walk loaded the bases for the Chargers to begin the seventh inning. The Chargers then proceeded to use four hits, five walks, two hit-by-pitches, and two more Wilmington errors to score 12 runs and stun the Wildcats.
Brandon Grygo, Tyer Pirrung, and Trevor Adamo all had two hits for the Wildcats with Pirrung leading with four RBI.
GAME 2:
Dominican kept the momentum into the nightcap, scoring two runs after having two outs and the bases empty in the top of the first.
Jack McDonald responded in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single in the home half of the first, scoring D'Angelo Ponce to cut the deficit in half.
A four-run bottom of the third inning put some distance between the Wildcats and Chargers. The Wildcats put runners on second and third with no outs before Brandon Grygo hit an infield single to plate the tying run. Garrett Quinn scored on a passed ball and then Mason DeLuca hit an RBI single. Jack McDonald scored on a first and third play, making it 5-2.
But the Chargers answered right back with a three-run fourth inning and then took the lead in the top of the fifth inning with another run.
The Wildcats answered right back in the bottom of the fifth however, starting with a Jack McDonald RBI single. An error at the plate allowed McDonald to come home and then Chase Fleming singled through the left side to plate two more runs. A wild pitch gave the Wildcats their final run, turning it into a 10-6 lead.
The Chargers put their first two batters on in the top of the seventh and had them on second and third with one out. Xavier Cortez came in and picked up a strikeout and then ended the game with strikeout for his first collegiate save.
Jack McDonald went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Brandon Grygo, Mason DeLuca, and Justin Hernandez all had two hits in the game.
Anthony Giordano pitched 2.1 innings of relief to pick up the win.
