Jefferson Splits Season Series With Volleyball After 3-0 Decision

NEWARK, Del. - - Jefferson secured a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division series split with the Wilmington University volleyball team by winning on Wednesday night, 3-0, inside the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-14, 25-19, and 25-15.

Each team earned a road sweep this season, with the Wildcats winning in Philadelphia on September 18 and the Rams sweeping the Wildcats in Newark tonight.

The Rams started the match with a 6-0 run and led 10-2, then rattled off five straight to take a 16-4 lead. The Rams took s 22-9 lead with a 3-0 run but then the Wildcats scored four straight to stay alive. The Wildcats saved a set point with a kill from Alex Serna, but the Rams took the first set with a kill, 25-14.

The Wildcats took a 5-4 lead early in the second set but then the Rams rattled off a 6-0 run to take command of the set, 10-5. The teams traded points back and forth throughout the entire set, until the Wildcats went on a 4-1 run to climb to within 22-19. But the Rams responded with the final three points to take a 2-0 lead, 25-19.

A block by Eliza Schneider and Ally Jonika brought the Wildcats to within 6-4 early in the third set. But then the Rams went on a 7-0 spurt, opening a 13-4 lead. The Wildcats got wo within 16-10 after a kill from Karla Nunez-Rivera, but the Rams had an answer again, using a 7-1 run to open a 23-11 lead. The Wildcats staved off three match points with two blocks and a Ram error, but then they finished off the contest with a block of their own, 25-15.

Alex Serna led the Wildcats with 10 kills while not committing an error on 14 attempts. She hit .714 for the match while adding four digs, a block, and an ace for 11.5 points. Karla Nunez-Rivera had six kills and four digs while Eliza Schneider added six digs and two blocks. Gabby Barth led the back row with 10 digs while Ally Jonika had a solo block and three block assists in the match.

The Wildcats remain home for another CACC contest on Saturday, welcoming Dominican to the WU Athletics Complex for a cross divisional contest. The first serve against the Chargers is set for 1:00 p.m.
