BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - Maddie Vollmar hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to turn the winner's bracket final around for the No. 2 Wilmington University softball team, defeating No. 4 Jefferson, 3-2, to advance to the final on Friday afternoon at Seaside Park.
With the win, the Wildcats (31-16) advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday and will face No. 3 Goldey-Beacom. The Wildcats are going for their third consecutive and sixth total CACC Tournament Championship.
The offense was slow to get going against the tough pitching staff of Jefferson and CACC Rookie of the Year Delaney Alix. The Rams got on the board with a walk, double, and RBI single in the second, and then made it 2-0 in the third with a two-out walk with the bases loaded.
Alix set down nine straight Wildcats until Sydney Hatch tripled to right center to start the top of the fifth. Eve Serrato came through with a pinch-hit RBI single to left, putting the Wildcats on the board.
Tristyn Stewart singled to center to start the bottom of the sixth and then Maddie Vollmar scraped the back of the left field wall with a two-run shot, giving the Wildcats the 3-2 lead. It was her first collegiate career home run.
Karen Sickle ventured back out to the circle in the top of the seventh, picking up a fly out and two ground balls to end the game and send the Wildcats to the final.
Sickle pitched the final four innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Bella Barnes went 2-for-3 in the game while Sydney Hatch's triple and Maddie Vollmar's homer were the only extra base hits for the Wildcats.
Saturday's final is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. Goldey-Beacom will need two wins on Saturday for its first CACC Tournament Championship and the Wildcats are looking for one win for their sixth overall.
