
NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-4 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setback to Goldey-Beacom on Thursday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 7-9-2 overall record, going 6-4-1 in CACC play to lock up the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament. They will hit the road for the First Round, traveling to No. 4 Caldwell on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The two teams tied, 1-1, earlier this season here at the Complex.
On Thursday, the Wildcats fell behind early to the Lightning (8-7-3, 6-5 CACC), trailing 3-0 at the halftime break.
The Wildcats attempted its comeback with a strong second half, but every time the Wildcats scored, the Lightning would have an answer. Jhamaleek Porter was dragged down in the box in the 52nd minute and The Faillon converted his eighth penalty kick of the season to put the Wildcats on the board. But the Lightning scored less than three minutes later to regain a three-goal lead.
Diego Ramirez headed in cross from Theo Faillon in the 60th minute to bring the Wildcats to within 4-2, but less than three minutes later the Lightning had another answer, scoring to make it 5-2 in the 63rd minute.
CACC leading goal scorer Theo Faillon notched his second goal of the game in the 64th minute, finishing off a cross from Diego Faillon for his 22nd goal of the season.
Michiharu Takanashi pounced on a miscue b the Lightning backline in the 78th minute, slotting a shot under the arm of the GBC goalkeeper to bring the Wildcats to within a single goa, 5-4, with more than 12 minutes to play.
But again, the Lightning had an answer, scoring just 1:06 later to extend the lead back out to two goals, 6-4. Michihari Takanashi had a chance to again cut it to a single goal, but his chip shot missed outside the right post. The game was called for darkness with 4:20 remaining on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats outshot the Lightning, 23-13, in the game, including 15-4 in the second half. They also earned more corners, 9-2, in the game.
The CACC Tournament begins on Sunday with the First Round and the Semifinals being hosted by the game's higher seed. The CACC Tournament Championship game will be hosted by Wilmington University at the WU Athletics Complex on Sunday, November 17.
