NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - With the announcement of the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Teams by the conference office on Tuesday, Wilmington's leading scorer Tenicia Spence earned a spot on the Second Team after a vote of the league's 14 head coaches.
Spence (Baltimore, Md./Western) led the Wildcats to a 7-19 overall record in the 2013-14 season, a four win improvement from the season prior. The Wildcats went 5-14 in the CACC, improving by four games in the league from last season.
The sophomore led the team in scoring, finishing second in the CACC and 18th in all of NCAA Division II in points per game, pouring in 20.4 points per contest. Spence tallied a season high 36 points while scoring more than 30 points in four games on the year. She also scored 20 or more point in 14 of the 26 games she played in this season.
The 36 points she scored at Lancaster Bible on January 6 are the second most a student-athlete has scored in a single contest in Wilmington University women's basketball program history, missing the all-time record by a single point. She also scored 35 points against Georgian Court, 34 points at West Virginia State, and 33 points against Felician. The team won all four games Spence scored more than 30 points.
Spence also added 20 or more points in 14 games, including a stretch of eight 20+ scoring outputs in nine games from December 20, 2013 to January 23, 2014.
The sophomore also got it done on the defensive end of the court, finishing third in the CACC and 60th in NCAA Division II with 60 steals on the year. Spence collected a season high six steals at Lancaster Bible and against Felician, averaging 2.3 swipes a contest.
Spence scored 15 points while dishing out six assists and grabbing four steals in the season finale at Caldwell on February 28. She will return in in her junior campaign needing only 12 points to become the fourth student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau.
She was joined on the Second Team by Goldey-Beacom's Lillian Chukwueze, Nyack's Audrey Matteson, Felician's Trina Plummer, and Bloomfield's Tierra Scott.
Caldwell's Jeanette Anderson was voted as the 2014 CACC Women's Basketball Player of the Year while USciences' Camille McPherson was named the 2014 CACC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year. Philadelphia's skipper Tim Shirley was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Rams to a 17-2 CACC record and South Division Regular Season Championship. Nyack was voted as the Sportsmanship Award winners.
