Delaware State Takes Instate Matchup, 66-36, from WilmU Women’s Basketball

DOVER, Del. - - In its first road test of the 2022-23 season, the Wilmington University women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division I and instate foe Delaware State, 66-36, on Tuesday night inside Memorial Hall.

Daja Claiborne hit an early three-pointer to give the Wildcats (0-3) a 3-2 lead, but then Delaware State (1-3) went on a 13-0 run and never looked back. The Hornets turned 28 Wilmington turnovers into 30 points at the other end, accounting for the margin of defeat, 66-36.

Daja Claiborne scored the first five points for the Wildcats and then Jade Roberts hit a straight-away three-pointer in the final minute of the first quarter, but the Hornets took an 18-8 lead into the second quarter.

Trinity Brittingham ended another Hornets' 11-0 run in the second quarter with a three-pointer, but the Hornets answered with another 8-0 run to take a 37-12 lead with 2:21 left before the half. Jade Roberts hit one from the foul line and Tye Queen converted a layup to end the half, as the hosts went into the locker room leading 37-15.

Delaware State started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 44-15. Amber Washington hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 50-22, but the Hornets continued to lead, 52-22, at the end of the third.

Amber Washington had eight of her team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer to bring the score to 59-31 with 3:47 to play. Jade Roberts had a driving layup and then Amber Washington converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 60-36 with 2:29 showing on the clock.

Washington led Wilmington with 11 points, adding 3 rebounds. Daja Claiborne finished with seven points and a team high nine rebounds while Jade Roberts added six points and six rebounds.

Delaware State was led by Denijsha Wilson's 17 points and four assists while Savannah Brooks scored 15 points.

The Wildcats are back in action this weekend, returning to NCAA DII play as they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York to take on Mercy College. The opening tip on Saturday is set for 3:00 p.m.
