WILMINGTON, Del. - - In its first action of the 2017 spring season, the Wilmington University women's tennis team defeated Millersville, 8-1, at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats (8-4) took all three doubles matches to start the afternoon before winning five out of the six singles matches to pick up the victory. It was the first action against another opponent since the Wildcats played in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals on October 22.
After the Wildcats took all three doubles matches, freshman Laura Gil and newcomer Andrea Ribalta ended their singles matches at nearly the same exact time. Gil picked up the win, 6-0 and 6-0, at number three singles while Ribalta won, 6-1 and 6-0, at number four singles.
Freshman Milica Knezevic earned a point for the Wildcats with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number six innings while Sabrina Blasi-Smith won at number five singles, 6-3 and 6-3. Freshman Begona Gomar picked up the final point for the Wildcats with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory at number two singles.
The Wildcats' 2017 spring schedule continues this weekend as they travel to Akron, Ohio to take part in the IUP Tournament. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Wayne State (Mich.) on Saturday and Grand Valley State on Sunday.
