CALDWELL, N.J. - - The Wilmington University baseball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Caldwell, 6-4 and 10-3, to stretch its winning streak to five straight on Sunday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval.
With the five-game CACC win streak, the Wildcats (13-11, 6-1 CACC) have moved into first place in the South Division.
GAME 1:
The Wildcats scored the first four runs of the game and then added two insurance runs late to secure the opening game victory.
The first two runs were produced by Nick Nocella, as he doubled in Nic Hertzfeld in the top of the first. He next came up in the top of the third and tripled in Jack McDonald to make it 2-0. Eddie Parry then hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Nocella for the 3-0 lead. Now with two outs in the third, Tristan Schoendienst stepped in launched his first career home run to left and the Wildcats led 4-0 after three innings.
The Cougars (7-16, 1-9 CACC) got to starter Rich Albrecht in the fourth inning, hitting a solo homer and then scoring a second run on a balk. The Cougars hit another solo shot down the left field line in the fifth and then cut it to a 5-4 game with an RBI single. Albrecht struck out the final batter of the inning to end his outing, finishing with 10 punchouts to pick up his first win.
Jack McDonald gave the Wildcats an insurance run in the top of the seventh, hitting a leadoff homer to center to make it 6-4. Dom Grady came on to pitch and struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 inning to secure his third save of the season.
Nick Nocella went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI while Tristan Schoendienst went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Jack McDonald finished 2-for-4 while Shawn Haut came off the bench and went 2-for-2.
GAME 2:
A seven-run third inning was the difference maker for the Wildcats in the nightcap, taking the lead following a 1-1 game.
Eddie Parry hit a two-out double in the top of the first to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. But the Cougars answered back with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the second, tying the game 1-1.
The third inning scoring started with one out and a runner on second. Jack McDonald tripled in Nic Hertzfeld and then Nick Nocella collected an RBI groundout to make it 3-1. Now with two outs and the bases empty, Eddie Parry restarted the inning with a triple before JJ Killen and Tristan Schoendienst walked to load the bases. Erik Grady brought in two with single before Matt Warrington added an RBI single as well. Following a pitching change, Nick Classie made it 8-1 with a two-run single as well.
Matt Warrington got in on the homer down the left field line train in the top of the fifth and then Mikey Rodriguez doubled to the gap in left center to score Shawn Edevane to close the scoring for the Wildcats, 10-3.
Anthony Giordano went the first four innings for the Wildcats, striking out three while allowing two runs on five hits without walking a batter. Tyler Brown tossed a scoreless fifth, Parry gave up a run in the sixth, and then Steven Mann pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the sweep.
Jack McDonald went 3-for-3 while Eddie Parry, Matt Warrington, and Nick Classie all had two hits. Erik Grady, Warrington, and Classie finished with two RBI in the game.
