Bats Come Alive in Baseball’s CACC Sweep of Bridgeport, 7-4 and 19-0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The bats came alive on Wednesday for the Wilmington University baseball team, using 29 hits to sweep Bridgeport, 7-4 and 19-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross divisional doubleheader at Seaside Park.

The Wildcats came from behind with 15 hits in the opener and then scored multiple runs in four innings in the nightcap with 14 more hits.

GAME 1:
Bridgeport answered a two-run top of the first inning with four runs of their own in its first at bat of the game. The Wildcats got closer with a run in the fourth but then completed the comeback with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning.

Chase Fleming and Xavier Cortez had two-out RBI singles in the first but then the Purple Knights collected five hits, including two triples, to score four runs and take a 4-2 lead. The Wildcats loaded the bases in the fourth, but only scored one run on a ground ball, getting to within 4-3.

With two outs and a runner on third in the sixth, Tyler Pirrung hit an RBI triple to right center to tie the game, 4-4. Jack McDonald then followed with an RBI single and the Wildcats led, 5-4, after six innings.

The Wildcats collected two more two out runs in the seventh, as Sean Glatts singled in Chase Fleming and Brandon Grygo capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Matt Warrington went five innings with nine strikeouts, allowing four runs on six hits to improve to 4-2 on the year. Dom Grady struck out a pair in a scoreless sixth inning and then Alex Krick picked up his second save of the year with a scoreless seventh.

Grygo, Pirrung, McDonald, Fleming, Glatts, and Garrett Quinn all had two hits in the opener.

GAME 2:
The Wildcats carried the momentum over into game two, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to set the stage. They added an eight-run fourth inning, a two-run fifth inning, and a five-run top of the seventh to score 19 runs.

The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the first inning without recording a hit. Four walks and two errors aided in the four runs for the Wildcats in the inning.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, and they were quickly cleared with a three-run double off the bat of Kory Pritchard. Chase Fleming followed with an RBI double and the Wildcats led 8-0. The Wildcats reloaded the bases in the inning and now with two outs, Nick Classie was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Brandon Grygo then cleared the bases again, hitting a three-run triple to make it 12-0.

Trevor Adamo doubled in a run in the fifth and Kyle Lowman picked up his first collegiate with an RBI in the seventh. Zach Walker hit a two-run double before AJ Tropiano hit an RBI single and the Wildcats opened a 19-0 advantage.

Steve Schenning went the first five innings for the Wildcats, striking out eight while only allowing one hit and two walks. Derek Huff tossed a scoreless sixth while Anthony Giordano tossed a scoreless seventh.

Brandon Grygo had two hits and a three RBI while Kory Pritchard also had three RBI. Zach Walker and Chase Fleming finished with two RBI each while Grygo and McDonald were the only Wildcats with multiple hits.

The Wildcats travel to Chestnut Hill on Saturday to complete the three-game series against the Griffins. The first pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
