Seniors Hit Homers in Nightcap to Help Baseball to a CACC Split with #18 Goldey-Beacom on Senior Day

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Beginning a key series for Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division positioning, the Wilmington University baseball team split a doubleheader with 18th ranked Goldey-Beacom on Senior Day, dropping the opener, 13-1, before earning a 9-3 win in the nightcap at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (29-17, 21-9 CACC) honored its 14 seniors prior to game one for Senior Day.

GAME 1:
The Lightning hit three home runs in the opener, taking the first game of the important series, 13-1.

Braden Kolmansberger started the scoring for the visitors with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Another two-run homer in the sixth made it 6-1 and then a Kolmansberger grand slam in the eighth put a cap on the game.

Shawn Edevane started the third inning with a double and then was brought home on an RBI single from Brandon Grygo to cut the deficit to 3-1. CJ Nocella doubled to put runners on second and third with only one out, but the Wildcats were not able to score again in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

Josearmando Diaz and Nick Classie had two hits each, with Classie hitting a double. Xavier Cortez took the loss after allowing eight runs in six innings.

GAME 2:
The tides turned in the nightcap, as it was the Wildcats hitting the home runs to earn the split, 9-3. Seniors Mason DeLuca, Nick Classie, and AJ Tropiano all hit round-trippers on Senior Day.

With two outs and Cam Trego on third, Mason DeLuca launched his second homer of the year to left to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

The Lightning got one run back by a third Braden Kolmansberger homer of the afternoon in the top of the second, but Nick Classie hit a two-out RBI single int eh bottom of the third to regain a two-run lead, 3-1.

Goldey-Beacom tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Wildcats took the game over with a five-run fifth. Josearmando Diaz started the inning with a double before Kody Clausius gave the Wildcats the lead for good with an RBI single. Now with two outs, Nick Classie launched a two-run homer to left for the 6-3 lead. Tristan Schoendienst doubled to keep the inning going and then AJ Tropiano homered to right center, giving the Wildcats an 8-3 lead.

Shawn Edevane added a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, finalizing the score, 9-3.

Tyler Reinert went the first five innings in the nightcap, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Dom Marotta tossed a scoreless sixth before Steve Schenning got two outs in the seventh and Alex Krick slammed the door shut with a strikeout to end it.

Nick Classie went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Josearmando Diaz went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
