ORLANDO, Fla. - - The streak is alive and well for the Wilmington University cheerleading team as they captured their seventh consecutive National Championship on Saturday, competing in the 2018 Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) Small Coed Division II competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Wildcats first broke through and won a National Championship in 2012 and have never wavered, claiming their seventh straight UCA Small Coed Division II National Championship on Saturday.

For the second year in a row, the Wildcats needed to advance through a preliminary round and place in the top six before performing the routine again for the National Championship.

It wasn't an issue for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats were one of the six teams to advance through the preliminary rounds and the defending champions went on to defeat Drury University, Kutztown University, St. Edward's University, San Francisco State University, and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to claim their seventh straight National Championship.

The competition started on Friday for the Wildcats, as a pair of stunt groups qualified to compete at the national championships as well.

The partner stunt duo of Wendy Mayerson and Jona Marrero qualified as one 15 pairs to earn an invitational. The pair finished 12th overall at the competition on Friday, as teams from Sam Houston State, Texas Tech, and Central Florida finished in the top three, respectively.

The all-girl stunt group of Kristen Basquill, Maranda Moreland, MaKayla Moreland, and Ciana Perez qualified seventh overall after their entry tapes were reviewed. UCA incited 12 all-girl groups to the competition, and the Wildcats finished seventh overall at the 2018 National Championships. Two teams from West Georgia finished in the top two, while a group from Louisville finished third in the All-Girls stunt event.

Saturday produced 15 national championships throughout the UCA portion of the competition, with coed winners in Division IA (Kentucky), Division I (Morehead State), Small Coed Division I (Purdue), Division II (West Georgia), Small Coed Division II (Wilmington), and Open (Shelton State Community College). There were three All-Girl National Champions in Division IA (Oklahoma), Division I (Morehead State), and Open (Nassau Community College). A new category produced for more winners in the Cheer Game Day group on Friday night in Division IA (Cincinnati), All-Girl Division IA (Mississippi), Open All-Girl (Cal Poly State), and Open Coed (Puerto Rico Bayamon). Tennessee Tech won the Open Mascot division while Minnesota won the Division IA Mascot division.

A review of the 2018 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship will be aired on the ESPN network of channels in the coming weeks.
