Golf Places Second at Spartan Shootout; In Eighth in East Region Going Into Final Tournament

POMONA, N.Y. - - Tyler Cleaves shot a tournament-best 69 in the second round of the Spartan Shootout on Friday, leading the Wilmington University golf team to a second-place finish with rounds of 307-298 for a 605 (+29) in one of the final tournaments prior to the postseason.

The Wildcats only trailed St. Thomas Aquinas, the No. 1 ranked team in the East Region according to Golf Stat, as the Spartans won the tournament with a 596 (+20). The Wildcats are now ranked No. 8 in the East Region according to the latest Golf Stat rankings.

After shooting an 81 in the first round on Friday morning, Tyler Cleaves turned it around to post a tournament-best 69 (-2) in the second round, moving all the way into a tie for eighth place overall with a 150 (+6). Cleaves was second in the tournament on all Par 4 Scoring, going one-under in the two rounds. He also led the team and finished in a tie for fourth overall with seven birdies.

Cleaves moved up to a tie for eighth overall, tying teammate Matthew Pulgini in the final standings. Pulgini shot rounds of 77 and 73 for a 150 (+6). Pulgini and Cleaves also tied on Par 4 Scoring, finishing second overall at one-under par but also led the Tournament with 27 pars in the two rounds.

Nathan Potts finished in a tie for 18th overall, posting rounds of 74-79 for a 153 (+9). Potts led the Wildcats and finished tied for eighth in the tournament at even par on Par 5 Scoring. He was also only one-over par on Par 4 Scoring, finishing tied for ninth overall. He was also tied for ninth overall with 23 pars in the two rounds.

Pablo Quintero finished in a tie for 23rd overall, shooting rounds of 77-78 for a 155 (+11). He was 10th in the tournament on Par 3 Scoring, finishing three-overall par in the two rounds. He was also only one-over par on Par 5 Scoring, finishing tied for 13th overall.

Jan Lekes was even par on the Par 3 Scoring, finishing tied for second in the tournament to lead the Wildcats. He posted rounds of 79-78 for a 157 (+13) and was tied for 28th overall in the tournament.

Playing as an individual, Blake Ramirez finished in a tie for 21st overall, improving his score by eight strokes in the second round. He posted rounds of 81 and 73 for a 154 (+10). Ramirez tied for fourth overall on Par 3 Scoring, finishing one-over par in the two rounds. He was also even par on Par 5 Scoring, tying for eight overall in the tournament.

As a team, the Wildcats led the tournament with a 4.13 (+10) average in Par 4 Scoring and was second on Par 3 Scoring, finishing with a 3.34 average (+17). They were second overall with 107 pars in the two rounds.

Goldey-Beacom's Hunter McGee won the tournament by seven strokes, shooting rounds of 69-72 for a 141 (-3).

The Wildcats have one tournament left in the regular season and then will need an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Super Regionals to continue their season.

The Super Regional Preview Tournament begin on Monday, April 24, hosted by Millersville at the Iron Valley Golf Club.
