NEWARK, Del. - - Nine goals in the first quarter propelled the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team to a 25-10 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Dominican on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats (3-6, 2-2 CACC) stormed out of the gates with the first nine goals of the game. Dominican (3-9, 1-3 CACC) scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter, but then the Wildcats scored four of the final six goals to take a 14-3 lead at the halftime break.
The win puts the Wildcats in the driver seat for the third and final bye into the CACC Tournament Semifinal round with a 2-2 record. With wins in their final three matches against Felician, Post, and Bridgeport, the Wildcats would be the No. 3 seed and avoid the play-in game.
Logan Stinson had a hat trick in the opening quarter while Josh Lovely assisted on three straight goals and scored a goal in the opening 15 minutes. Josh Lovely continued his career day with two more goals in the second quarter while Jacob Herman assisted on three of the five goals.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter with the Wildcats narrowly winning the frame, 6-5. Logan Stinson and Jacob Herman each scored two goals in the quarter. After the Chargers scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 20-10, the Wildcats finished the game with the final five goals of the game.
The Wildcats were aided by a 23-15 win at the face-off circle, with Charlie Plasse leading the way with a 22-for-36 performance.
Josh Lovely finished with a season high 10 points, scoring five goals while dishing out five assists. Logan Stinson scored seven goals and added two assists for nine points. Jacob Herman totaled eight points, scoring three goals while dishing out five assists. TJ Caton scored five goals as well, adding an assist for six points.
The Wildcats will look to carry the game's momentum into Saturday, as they travel to Felician for a night game at Riggin Memorial Field. The opening face-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
