
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Four Wilmington University Spring student-athletes earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week Awards, with the four sports going 12-1 overall last week.
Baseball's Dom Marotta was named the CACC Pitcher of the Week while softball's Maddie Vollmar was named the CACC Rookie of the Week. On the turf, men's lacrosse's Andrew Dzubak was named a CACC Co-Player of the Week while women's lacrosse's Ella Royer earned another CACC Player of the Week award.
Dom Marotta (Sewell, N.J./Paul VII) and the baseball team went 5-1 last week, sweeping Bridgeport and going 3-1 against Chestnut Hill over the weekend. Marotta appeared in three of the games out of the pen and had a decision in all three games. He earned his first save of the year with an inning of work in game one against Bridgeport. He pitched the 10th and 11th innings of game one at Chestnut Hill as the offense came back in the 11th. He also pitched a scoreless seventh in game two on Sunday, allowing the offense to come back and score three runs in the bottom half for the win.
In four games last week, Maddie Vollmar (Thornton, Colo./Horizon) batted .643 with three doubles and four RBI, scoring a team high seven runs as well. In a doubleheader sweep of Goldey-Beacom, Vollmar batted 6-for-8 with a double in each game, scoring five runs while knocking in one run. In a doubleheader against Dominican, the freshman outfielder batted 3-for-6 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. She had a 1.524 OPS for the week. She also appeared in the circle in game two against Dominican, throwing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
In a CACC victory over Bridgeport, Andrew Dzubak (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led the Wildcats with five goals and four assists for a season high nine points. He only took seven shots to score his five goals, adding four caused turnovers and three ground balls in the 19-9 victory.
For the third time this season, Ella Royer (Sherwood Park, Alberta/Vima Ridge Academy) was named the CACC Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 week. She scored 16 goals and four assists for 20 points, adding 20 draws, seven ground balls, and four caused turnovers. She scored nine goals, including the program record breaking mark, in a win over Frostburg State. Trailing 17-15 late in the game, Royer scored the final three goals of the game, including the game-winner with 17 seconds left for the 18-17 win. She also had a season-high 11 draws in the win. In the team's CACC opener, Royer scored seven goals and added four assists for 11 points in a 25-6 win over Felician. She added nine draws, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Each team also placed a member on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll. Baseball's Brandon Grygo, softball's Kylee Gunkel, men's lacrosse's Daniel Flynn, and women's lacrosse's Allison Schiavone were all named to their sports' Weekly Honor on Monday.
