NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's lacrosse team will appear in its fourth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game after defeating Post, 25-10, in the semifinal round on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex.
The top seeded Wildcats used 13 different goal scorers to score the 25 goals with 16 different Wildcats recording a point in the win. Daniel Flynn also made six saves in the third quarter, four in the final possession to thwart any thought of a comeback.
After the teams split the first two goals, the Wildcats rattled off five straight to take a 6-1 lead. They scored three goals on one locked-in penalty, using the man-advantage to take a 5-1 lead. Post scored the final goal of the quarter, sending the game into the second with a 6-2 score.
Carter Earl and Josh Weston scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead. The Eagles scored back-to-back goals but then Andrew Dzubak got on the board to stop the run, making it a 9-4 game. Post scored again to make it 9-5, but then the Wildcats closed out the half with four straight goals.
Layton Avant scored to start the run, being the first Wildcat to score multiple goals in the game. The Wildcats scoring the first nine goals of the game using nine different student-athletes.
Josh Weston and Brady Frys scored to start the third quarter, taking their largest lead of the game to that point, 15-5. Post scored two of the next three goals to get within 16-7 and have multiple chances inside a minute to play to get even close, but Daniel Flynn made save after save to keep the Wildcats in front, 16-7, going to the fourth.
Santiago Figueroa and Carter Earl scored to start the fourth quarter and then secured the victory with a 7-0 run, taking their largest lead of the game, 25-9.
Josh Weston led the Wildcats with five goals while Josh Lovely scored four goals and added two assists. Andrew Dzubak scored three goals and added two assists while Carter Earl and Layton Avant had two goals and two assists each.
Connor Widmer went 20-for-25 at the face-off spot while Tyler Quinn secured 10 ground balls. Quinn Tracy, Brady Frys, Daniel Flynn, and Layton Avant all had two caused turnovers as well. Flynn made 10 saves in goal.
The Wildcats advance to the CACC Tournament Championship on Saturday, facing No. 2 Georgian Court who defeated No. 3 Chestnut Hill, 13-12, in overtime. The Championship game is slated for a 12:00 p.m. opening face-off on the campus of Dominican University in Orangeburg, New York.
