Wilmington Women’s Basketball’s Jocelyn Rodriguez Named CACC Defensive Player of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Wilmington University women's basketball junior guard Jocelyn Rodriguez was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week in leading her team to a 2-0 week last week.

Rodriguez (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth's) perfected the art of the theft last week, averaging 6.0 steals per game against Georgian Court and Concordia. The junior point guard also averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 rebound, and 3.5 assists per game in leading the Wildcats last week.

The week started by tying the second best mark in program history with seven steals against Georgian Court. Rodriguez added 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists in the win. She then swiped five more steals against Concordia on Friday, adding a season's best 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while adding five rebounds and five assists.

The junior is now averaging 5.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.0 steals per game on the season. The two CACC wins moves the Wildcats into a tie for fourth place in the South Division with USciences at 5-6. The Wildcats have also evened their overall record to 10-10 on the year.

It is the first time in her career that Rodriguez has been named a CACC Player of the Week.

Men's basketball's Tyaire Ponzo-Meek earned a spot on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 31.0 points per game and 11.3 rebounds in leading the Wildcats to a 1-2 week. He hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer at Lincoln to start the week and added his 1,000th career point on Wednesday against Georgian Court. He became the fourth player in the Wildcats' NCAA era to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Rodriguez and Ponzo-Meek lead their teams into a pair of CACC games this week, first as the Wildcats head to Philadelphia for another CACC South Division matchup on Tuesday night.
