WILMINGTON, Del. - - Jasmine McDuffie had a promising debut for the Wilmington University women's basketball team, but a slow start in the 2024-25 season opener proved too much to overcome as New Haven took the lid lifter, 83-57, on Friday afternoon on the campus of Goldey-Beacom College.
New Haven (1-0) raced out to a 28-9 first quarter advantage and never looked back. The Wildcats (1-0) played the final three quarters to a 55-48 score, even outscoring the Chargers, 20-17, in the fourth frame.
Jasmine McDuffie scored 18 points for the Wildcats, hitting three three-pointers while adding four rebounds and two steals. Mya Nisbet also hit three three-pointers, going 3-for-5 from deep for nine points while adding three assists and two rebounds. Aniyah Bond scored nine points as well, adding a team-high five rebounds in the loss. Emma Brown came off the bench to score seven points in her Wildcat debut.
The Chargers scored the first 16 points out of the gate before Aniyah Bond put the Wildcats on the board with an offensive putback with 4:22 to play. A Chargers' three-pointer at the buzzer made it a 19-point game, 28-9.
The Chargers' lead ballooned to as large as 30 points in the third quarter, first with 7:23 to go in the frame. Another Aniyah Bond putback in the fourth quarter brought the Wildcats back to within 21 with 7:38 left in the game, before the game settled on the 26-point difference.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, completing the NE10/CACC Crossover weekend with a battle against Bentley. The game will again be at Goldey-Beacom with an 11:0 a.m. tip-off inside the Joseph West Jones Center.
