Halftime Lead Doesn’t Hold As Cheyney Comes Back to Defeat Women’s Basketball, 67-63

NEWARK, Del. - - Aniyah Bond and TyKeisha Hill recorded double-doubles, but Cheyney battled back in the fourth quarter to take a 67-63 nonconference match up from the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Aniyah Bond with four three-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points while grabbing 10 rebounds while TyKeisha Hill had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (0-11). The Wolves (6-4) outscored the Wildcats, 20-15, in the fourth quarter to come back and defeat the Wildcats.

Cheyney jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead, but the Wildcats went on a 16-8run to tie the game, 16-16. Mya Nisbet then hit a three-pointer on the Wildcats' final possession of the first quarter to take a 19-16 lead into the second.

An Aniyah Bond three-pointer and a TyKeisha Hill layup gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 24-18, with 8:17 to play in the second quarter. The Wolves battled back to tie the game, 25-25, but then Emma Brown capped a 5-0 run with an old-fashioned three-point play, 30-25. Armani Bell-Jackson dumped a pass off to Bond on the break to beat the buzzer, and the Wildcats took a 34-30 lead into the locker room.

Cheyney hit three-pointers to start the third quarter and take the lead, 36-34. Cheyney took a three-point lead with 3:25 to play and then as large as a four-point lead after two free throws with 2:12 showing on the clock. TyKeisha Hill then had back-to-back offensive putbacks to tie the game and Jasmine McDuffie hit a three-pointer to put the Wildcats in front, 48-46. The Wildcats took a 48-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

A three-point play gave the Wolves the lead to start the fourth but then Hill and Brown scored back-to-back buckets to put the Wildcats back in front, 52-50. The teams went on the seesaw with Samiyah McFarlane giving the Wildcats their last lead, 58-57, with a free throw with 4:35 to play. An offensive putback and another layup gave the Wolves the lead for good, taking a 61-58 lead with 2:40 remaining.

Daja Claiborne and Emma Brown cut the deficit to a single point at different points, but an offensive rebound and putback with the shot-clock winding down was the backbreaker for the Wildcats, as the Wolves extended the lead out to 65-62 with nine seconds to play. The Wolves closed out the game with free throws, 67-63.

Emma Brown added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats, picking up three blocked shots as well. Mya Nisbet chipped in with six points, five assists, and three steals.

The Wildcats remain home for another game this week, hosting Kutztown on Saturday afternoon. The opening tip is set for 1:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
