SINKING SPRING, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's bowling team set a new Baker high game and series score a the 2017 Golden Bear Classic over the weekend, finishing in 12th place while competing at Berks Lanes.
Competing in 11 Baker games during the three days, the Wildcats averaged a 681.91 team score prior to the positional round matches on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats fell to St. Peter's, 4-1, and to Roberts Wesleyan, 4-0, in the best-of-seven bracket matches to finish in 12th place overall.
One of the closest matches of the tournament came during their new record setting game and series on Saturday against Duquesne. Each of the team's Baker scores got better through each game of the match, culminating with a 247 in the fourth game. The team collected seven strikes during the fourth game, including six straight from the second to seventh frames. The team also picked up spares in the first and eight frames. The team put up scores of 95, 122, 180, 247, and 138, but fell to Duquesne 851-782.
The team also lost a close one to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, falling by a heartbreaking 33 pins. The Wildcats took the first and fourth games (151-129 and 112-93) but it was a comeback in the fifth and final game that gave Roberts Wesleyan the win. Trailing 534-515 after four games, the Red Hawks used a 176-124 advantage in the final game to take the match, 691-658.
The Wildcats will now compete in their final tournament next weekend when they head to the James Brown Invitational hosted by Morgan State in Baltimore. The tournament will run from February 17-19.
