
ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - - A 9-0 second quarter was too much for the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team to overcome, falling at two-time defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champion Dominican, 19-8, on Wednesday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats who are now 5-4 overall and 1-1 in CACC play. The win was the Chargers' sixth in a row, standing atop the CACC at 7-1 and 3-0 in conference play.
The Chargers raced out to a 4-0 lead before Tristan Holdsworth scored twice at the end of the first quarter to cut the deficit in half. Ella Royer assisted both goals as the Chargers took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
But the second quarter was all Dominican, going on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 13-2 lead at the halftime break. Dominican won the draw game, 7-3, in the quarter, leading to a 12-0 advantage in shots.
The Wildcats tried coming back in the third quarter, getting back-to-back goals to start the third quarter from Mia Schultz and Eden Ward. Tristan Holdsworth scored her third of the game with 7:04 to play in the third, bringing the Wildcats to within 14-5. But the Chargers scored back-to-back goals to regain a 16-5 lead before Ella Royer scored at the end of the frame as the Wildcats own the quarter, 4-3.
Mia Schultz and Sophie Shive scored for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter, but the Chargers won the frame, 3-2, to win the game, 19-8.
Tristan Holdsworth led the team with three goals and an assist while Mia Schultz added two goals and an assist. Ella Royer finished with a goal, two assists, five draws, and two ground balls. Megan Molinelli had two caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Wildcats.
The Chargers held a 20-8 advantage in draws, leading to a 34-14 lead in shots in the game.
The Wildcats are on the road again this weekend, traveling to Bridgeport for a CACC game on Saturday. The opening draw is scheduled for 3:15 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
