NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team had a lead in each half against the top team from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, but Georgian Court responded each time and the two played to a 2-2 tie at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Georgian Court (10-3-1, 9-0-1 CACC) out shot the Wildcats (7-8-1, 6-3-1 CACC), 27-9, in the match but it was the Wildcats who struck first in each half against to take a lead.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to strike, as Rebecca Dolhansky converted the first chance either team had in the fifth minute. Cassidy McErlain dropped a pass back to Dolhansky and her blast from 20 yards out beat the Lion goalkeeper up high and stayed under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead just 4:31 into the match.
But the Lions were able to knot the game moments later, scoring in the 11th minute with their third shot of the game. Heather Arbachesky caught Kate Tubo off her line in the penalty box and was able to go over the top from just outside the 18-yard box to tie the game, 1-1, 10:41 into the game.
The Lions nearly took the lead in the 17th minute, but Kaitlin Lister's shot on the back post was stopped by Daryan Fennal and cleared from danger to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1. Georgian Court went on to outshoot the Wildcats, 11-2, in the first half, but the game remained tied heading into the break.
Georgian Court came out of the half and put up the first eight shots of the second half, but it was the Wildcats' first shot that was able to put the home team in front in the 71st minute.
Freshman Kiana Jedlicka had the ball on the left side, and her left-footed attempt sailed high and over the goalkeeper, hit the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and the 2-1 lead 70:29 into the match.
The Wildcats followed with three shots and a corner in the next five minutes, but it was the Lions' that were able to find the back of the net again. Anissia Fuccia slotted a ball past a hard charging Tubo in the 79th minute, tying the game, 2-2, with 11:41 remaining in the game.
Wilmington had a pair of chances in the second overtime period, nearly converting on their lone corner kick opportunity. But the Wildcats couldn't find the final tough with the ball sitting in the box in the 105th minute. Jasmine Brake also took a chance with a long blast in the 107th minute, but her shot sailed just above the crossbar to keep the game locked at 2-2.
Tubo tied her season high with 12 saves in goal for the Wildcats while Anetha Jenkins came in for the final 34:18 for the Lions and made one save to record the tie.
The Wildcats are currently in fifth place in the CACC with two games remaining in the regular season. They head to Dominican on Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. start time.
