Women’s Tennis Wins Fifth Straight with 8-1 Victory at Post

WATERBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team revenged a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinal loss on Thursday, earning an 8-1 victory at Post to remain in third place in the league with one match remaining.

For the third straight match, the Wildcats (7-5, 5-2 CACC) won all six singles matches, stretching their winning streak to five straight. Post (6-7, 3-4 CACC) slipped to seventh place in the CACC with the loss.

Jane Malygina and Tess Paya got the scoring started for the Wildcats with an 8-0 win at number three doubles. Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe followed that up with an 8-2 victory at number two doubles for the 2-0 lead. Laura Gil and Andrea Ribalta hung tough at number one singles, but eventually fell, 8-6.

But both Gil and Ribalta were able to bounce back in their singles matches, a Ribalta won, 6-0 and 6-0, at number five while Gil rebounded for a 6-0 and 6-1 victory at number two.

Sabrina Blasi-Smith won at number six singles, 6-0 and 6-0, while Malygina remained unbeaten in singles play since joining the Wildcats in October with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number three singles. Sathe kept the singles perfect for the Wildcats with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number four while Gomar completed the singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at number one.

The Wildcats have one final regular season contest before returning to the CACC Tournament. They will play for the number three seed and an automatic berth into the Semifinals when they take on Jefferson on Saturday. A win locks up the third seed and a spot in the CACC Tournament Semifinal while a loss drops the Wildcats to the fourth seed and having to play in the quarterfinal match against the fifth seed.

The Wildcats and Rams will battle on Saturday in Philadelphia starting at 12:00 p.m.
