Women’s Tennis Takes Over Sole Possession of First Place with 6-1 Victory at Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team picked up a key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Monday afternoon, defeating Jefferson, 6-1, to take over sole possession of first place with one match to play in the regular season.

The win splits the regular season series with the Rams, as Jefferson took the first meeting of the year, 5-2. The Wildcats are now 8-1 on the year while Jefferson is now 7-2 in the CACC with one match left for each team, which are both scheduled to be played on Tuesday.

For the fourth match in a row, the Wildcats started the day with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Alva Norberg and Marley Trifunovic started the day off with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 and then Larize Nel and Kushi Khandoji combined for a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Fenna Swaan and Valentina Ivankovic solidified the sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles as well.

Fenna Swaan carried the momentum of her doubles win into her singles match, taking care of her opponent in under an hour, winning, 6-1 and 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Marley Trifunovic made it a 3-0 team score with a win at No. 4 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-5.

Larize Nel then stamped the team victory with a win at No. 6 singles. She also won in straight sets, winning 7-5 and 6-2 to clinch the victory, 4-0.

Alva Norberg kept the momentum going for the Wildcats, winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles as well. She won, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3), to make it 5-0. Valentina Ivankovic kept the momentum going at No. 2, needing a third set super set, but defeating Noelle Frenzl, 7-5, 5-7, and 1-0 (10-7).

Jess Purdy won the first set at No. 1 singles, but Jefferson battled back to take the match in a third set super set.

The Wildcats look to clinch their third straight CACC Regular Season Championship tomorrow as they head to Dominican. The first serve is set for 3:00 p.m. at Manny Welder Park in Monsey, New York.
