Women’s Tennis Shuts Out New Haven, 7-0

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team picked up a key regional victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating New Haven, 7-0, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (14-3) battled from behind to claim the doubles point, and then took all six singles matches to sweep the Chargers.

New Haven (10-4) won at No. 2 doubles to take a brief lead, but then Fenna Swaan and Valentina Ivankovic won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, to even the series. Jess Purdy and Marley Trifunovic finished off the doubles' point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

Larize Nel made quick work at No. 5 singles to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead, winning 6-2 and 6-2. Marley Trifunovic put the Wildcats up, 3-0, with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-1 and 6-2, and then Jess Purdy clinched the team victory with a 6-1 and 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles.

Valentina Ivankovic kept the shutout alive at No. 3 singles, winning in straight set, 6-2 and 7-6 (10-5), pouting the Wildcats up 5-0. Fenna Swaan dropped the second set but bounced back to take the third set and the match, 6-2, 2-6, and 7-5, and then Alva Norberg came back from a set down to win, 4-6, 6-2, and 7-6 (10-5) at No. 1 singles to finish off the shutout.

Another tough east region matchup awaits the Wildcats, as they travel to New York to take on St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon. The first serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
