Four Pitchers Combine to Shutout Saint Anselm, 7-0, in Cary

CARY, N.C. - - The combination of four Wilmington University baseball pitchers shut down Saint Anselm on Sunday, 7-0, for the second shutout of the season on the final game of its early season trips to the USA Baseball Training Complex.

Tyler Reinert went the first five innings before Brandon Grygo came on for two innings of relief. Dom Marotta tossed a scoreless eighth before Garrett Quinn sealed the shutout with a scoreless ninth. The Wildcats only allowed five hits while striking out nine batters.

The staff got all the support they would need in the bottom of the first inning, getting an RBI single from Tristan Schoendienst before Schoendienst came around and scored on a passed ball, 2-0.

Chase Fleming started the second by getting hit by a pitch. He was sacrificed up to second and then doubled home by Brandon Grygo. Schoendienst was at it again in the third, starting the frame with a double. Josearmando Diaz walked, and D'Angelo Ponce doubled in a run. Nick Classie added to the lead with a sacrifice fly, making it 5-0 after three innings.

Grygo put the first two runners on in the top of the sixth, but avoided any damage to keep the shutout intact. The Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half, adding insurance runs with a Fleming RBI walk and another RBI single from Schoendienst.

Dom Marotta struck out a pair in the eighth and then Quinn struck out the side after putting the first two on via a walk to complete the shutout.

Tristan Schoendienst batted 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. D'Angelo Ponce went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tyler Reinert earned his first win of the season.

The Wildcats return north and begin play in the area on Wednesday afternoon at West Chester. The first pitch against the Golden Rams is set for 3:00 p.m.
