
SPARKILL, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team won its third straight game while wrapping up its nonconference schedule, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 20-9, on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Wildcats (8-4) used a 9-0 run, including a 6-0 second quarter, to open a 16-3 lead in the early part of the third quarter.
The game started with goals from Mia Schultz and Eden Ward and then three straight by the Wildcats to take a 5-1 lead. Eden Ward had three of the first five goals for the Wildcats. The Spartans closed the gap to 7-3 before Ella Royer and Tristan Holdsworth ended the first quarter with goals for the 9-3 lead.
Eden Ward scored the first two goals of the second quarter before Ella Royer scored back-to-back goals from the free position spot to make it 14-3. Michaella Cook scored a goal with 39 seconds left to send the Wildcats into the halftime break, 15-3.
Anastasia Giannoulis scored the first goal of the third and then Alea Javorowsky got on the board with back-to-back goals to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 18-4.
Ella Royer led the Wildcats with five goals and three assists while Eden Ward finished with five goals and an assist. Tristan Holdsworth scored three goals and added three assists while Michaella Cook added two goals and three assists. Alea Javorowsky chipped in with two goals and two assists. Royer led the team with seven draws while Sophie Shive led the defense with three caused turnovers.
Ashleigh Lawry made two stops in the first half while Allison Schiavone made three stops in the second half.
The Wildcats have five games left in the regular season, all within Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. They start the home stretch with a road game on Saturday at Caldwell. The opening draw is set for 2:00 p.m.
