WATERTOWN, Conn. - - A rain-soaked day changed the format of the 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Golf Championship, but midway through the tournament the Wilmington University golf team is in position to strike, sitting in second with a 302 (+18) on Monday afternoon at the Watertown Golf Club.

Monday's rain turned the 54-hole championship into a 36-hole championship, but nonetheless, the Wildcats head into the final round just two strokes off the lead. Goldey-Beacom shot a 300 (+16) on Monday. The last time the Wildcats were competing for the CACC Championship, they overcame a 10-stroke deficit in the second round to win the 2019 Championship over Goldey-Beacom.

The Wildcats were led by Matthew Pulgini's 72 (+1), as he is third on the leaderboard after the first round. Pulgini turned his round around on the back nine to turn in a good card. Starting on the par three fourth, Pulgini started his round with bogeys on three of his first six holes. He birdied the par four 11th but a bogey put him back to three-over par after the 12th hole. He then birdied the par three 14th and the par five 16th to get to one-over. He finished his round with pars on his final five holes for his 72 (+1).

Tyler Cleaves also got off to a slow start during the heaviest part of the rainstorm, but battled back to sit in a tie for fourth overall. His morning started with a bogey on the par four third, and then had double bogeys on the par four fifth and par five seventh to be as many as five-over par. But a birdie on the par four 10th started a positive back nine for the sophomore, as he then sank pars on the next six holes. He birdied the par four 17th but a bogey on the par four 18th put him back to four-over par. But he finished strong with a birdie on the par four second hole, finishing with a 74 (+3).

Pablo Quintero and Jan Lekes are tied for 12th overall with identical 78 (+7) scores. Each golfer had one birdie each, but each also had a triple-bogey. Jan Lekes had a par on every hole on the front nine, finishing with a tournament leading 13 pars on the day. Pablo Quintero finished with 11 pars to get to his 78 (+7).

Nathan Potts sits in a tie for 20th overall with a 79 (+8), birdieing the par five seventh for his lone birdie of the round. He was holding at five over par before a double bogey on his third to last hole and a bogey on his final hole, the par four fifth set him back to 79 (+8).

Tyler Cleaves is tied for the tournament lead in par three scoring, sitting even after the four par-three holes. Cleaves and Matthew Pulgini are tied for second in par four scoring at one-over while Nathan Potts and Pulgini are tied for second on par five scoring at one-under par.

Goldey-Beacom's Hunter McGee and Dominican's Alejandro Gomez are tied atop the leaderboard with a 72 (+1) after the first round. The Lightning lead the tournament with a 300 (+16) while Post is third overall with a 305 (+21).

The Wildcats are lasts off the tees on Tuesday and will begin teeing off at 10:00 a.m. The Wildcats will be paired with Goldey-Beacom and Post.
