Wilmington Men’s Soccer Fends Off Georgian Court, 2-0, in Final Regular Season Home Game

A pair of first half goals and a clean defensive afternoon allowed the Wilmington University men's soccer team to defeat Georgian Court, 2-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday.

The win give the Wildcats (11-6, 7-4 CACC) 21 points in the conference standings with one match to play. The Wildcats sit in sixth place with a match against CACC leading Philadelphia on Friday; still with a chance to finish in the top four of the conference and host a CACC Tournament Quarterfinal match.

All the scoring on Tuesday came in an 11-minute window, as Lance Berry converted the eventual game-winning penalty kick in the 10th minute. The junior is now 3-for-3 on the season in penalty kicks, scoring his third goal of the season just 9:10 into the match.

Junior Josh Fawssett finished off an excellent run by Samuel Naiwo in the 21st minute, as the referee signaled a "play-on" following a foul on Naiwo. Naiwo's final touch came at the top of the "D" on the 18-yard box, but as he was taken to the ground, Fawssett was making a diagonal run into the box to take over where Naiwo left off.

Fawssett took a touch around Georgian Court's (3-11-2, 3-7-1 CACC) goalkeeper Rylan Gentil and slotted the ball into the empty net 20:06 into the contest. It was Fawssett's team lead tying seventh goal of the season.

In a physical second half, the Wildcats kept their heads to secure the shutout. The Wildcats' Frank Hall recorded four saves, three of which came in the second half, for his first lone shutout of the season, and the team's second in a row.

The Wildcats outshot the Lions, 24-10, for the match, getting an even 12 shots off in each half. Thirteen of the 24 shots were on frame for the Wildcats. Gentil made 11 stops for the Lions.

With a win on Friday at Philadelphia and a loss or tie by Concordia against the Lions on Thursday, the Wildcats would slide into fourth place in the CACC standings and host a first round game.

Friday's match at Philadelphia is schedule for a 2:30 p.m. start.
