NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of freshmen helped their respective teams to a competitive week of matchups last week as Wilmington University's cross country's Mark Puharic and women's soccer's Krysta Memis were named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookies of the Week, as announced by the conference offense on Tuesday.
Memis (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Wissahickon) was named the Co-Player and Co-Rookie of the Week while Puharic (Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) was named the CACC Male Rookie of the Week.
Memis helped the Wildcats to a 2-1 week, going 2-0 in the CACC. The Wildcats also played on Sunday afternoon, picking up a win to start the week to go 3-1 in a seven-day stretch. The freshman scored three goals in three games, including two at Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon. She scored the eventual game-winner in the fifth minute before tacking on her second goal of the game in the 50th minute. It was her first career multi-goal game. Her week finished with a goal at Bloomfield, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Memis was named the Co-Player and Co-Rookie of the Week with Goldey-Beacom's Alanna Speaks.
Puharic helped led the Wildcat runners to a team title at the University of Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park. He was the top CACC freshman finisher at the event, placing 15th overall but earning 12 points for the team. He ran the 8K event in 29:09.17, being the third Wildcat to cross the line in the meet. It was his fastest 8K time of the season, running in three events so far in 2017.
Men's soccer's Abdul Mansaray was named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll after scoring the game-winner in the 68th minute at Holy Family. He also assisted on the game's first goal.
Cross Country's Mark Corrigan was named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll as well after being the top Wildcat finisher at the UD Invite as well. He finished third overall, picking up two points for the Wildcats, leading the team to the meet crown. He also ran his fastest 8K of the year, finishing in 27:40.98.
