Larize Nel and Matt Gonzalez Named CACC Players of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Wildcat's collected two more Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week on Tuesday, as women's tennis' Larize Nel was named the CACC Player of the Week and cross country's Matt Gonzalez was named the CACC Rookie of the Week.

It is the first time in her career that Larize Nel (Sasolburg Free State, South Africa) has been named a CACC Player of the Week while this is Matt Gonzalez's (East Brunswick, N.J.) second time this year he has been named the CACC Rookie of the Week.

Larize Nel led the Wildcats to a 2-0 week inside the CACC, helping them to claim the 2021 CACC Regular Season Championship. In a 7-0 win over Dominican, Nel won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 4 singles and partnered up with teammate Fenna Swaan at No. 2 doubles to win 6-0. Then she won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 6 singles at Post and again teamed up with Swaan to win 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. She is undefeated on the year at 6-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles.

Matt Gonzalez was the first NCAA runner to cross the line at the Jack St. Clair Memorial race on Saturday, finishing the 8K course in 28:12.8. He was seventh overall in leading the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish at Belmont Plateau in Fairmont Park in Philadelphia.

Yailynn Ramirez was mentioned on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for a 10th place finish at the Jack St. Clair. Fenna Swaan was also named on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for the tennis team.
