WASHINGTON, D.C. - - Closing out the 2023-24 regular season, the Wilmington University women's tennis team bageled the District of Columbia, 7-0, on Sunday at the UDC Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats now wait for the NCAA Selection Show to see what seed and where they will be playing in the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, May 6.
On Sunday, the Wildcats won all three doubles matches, first getting a win from Jess Purdy and Gloria Barcaro at No. 3, 6-2. The duo of Valentina Ivankovic and Fenna Swaan clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1, 6-3, and then Larize Nel and Kushi Khandoji made it a clean sweep with a 7-5 victory at No. 2.
The Wildcats' momentum carried into the singles matches as Kushi Khandoji started the singles scoring with a 6-2 and 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Marley Trifunovic put the Wildcats wo within a point of the team victory with a win at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-5). Valentina Ivankovic secured the team victory at No. 3 singles, needing a third set but getting it done, 6-3, 2-6, and 6-1, to make it 4-0.
Jess Purdy kept the ball rolling for the Wildcats at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3 and 7-6 (7-1) before Alva Norberg came back from a set down at No. 1 to win, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, and 6-4. Larize Nel wrapped up the shutout with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-0 and 6-1.
The Wildcats finish the 2023-24 regular season with a 16-5 overall mark, winning the CACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships for the third consecutive season. They earned the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA East Regional Tournament and await the NCAA Selection show. The Wildcats have gone to the NCAA National Tournament, the Final 16, in each of the past two seasons.
