Volleyball Drops a Pair to Wrap Up 2016 Wildcat Regional Invitational

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team closed out the 2016 Wildcat Regional Invitational with a pair of 3-0 losses on Saturday, first to Le Moyne and then against Franklin Pierce at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match against Le Moyne were 25-19, 25-16, and 25-19.

Set scores for the match against Franklin Pierce were 25-21, 25-23, and 25-17.

Errors off the arms of the Wildcats (2-6) proved to be the difference on Saturday, as they committed 10 service errors against Le Moyne and 23 attack errors against Franklin Pierce. The Wildcats hit .127 as a team in the first match before hitting .076 against the nightcap.

Le Moyne ended the first set by scored eight of the final 10 points of the game, breaking a 17-17 tie to take the set. The Dolphins turned an 11-10 deficit into a 19-12 lead with a 9-1 run in the second and turned an 11-9 deficit into a 16-11 lead in the third with a 7-0 run.

Freshman Emma Kongevold led the hitters with a .333 attack percentage, collecting eight kills on 18 swings with just two errors. Allison Briley finished with a team high nine kills while also adding seven digs. Miranda Shaw dished out 25 assists while Addalyn Flores led the way with eight digs for the match.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but the Ravens used an 8-0 run to take a 14-9 lead and eventually as large as a 19-11 lead in the first. The Wildcats fought back from an early 12-6 deficit in the second to get to within 14-12 and then as close as two points again at 20-19. Three straight points brought for the Wildcats tied the set at 22 and again at 23, but the Ravens came up with back-to-back points to move ahead, 2-0.

Five straight points in the third set gave the Wildcats a 7-4 lead, but an 8-2 run put the Ravens ahead for good. Another five-point swing gave the visitors a 19-13 lead before another 4-0 run put them up 23-15. A service error ended the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

Briley led the offense once again with 11 kills, hitting .125 for the match while adding a double-double with 13 digs. Eile Harris led the hitters with a .278 attack percentage, collecting nine kills on 18 swings. Brianna Cunha led the defense with 17 digs while Flores and Shaw each chipped in with 12 digs. Rebecca Rawlinson denied two blocks by herself while also getting a hand on three block assists.

After five straight home games, the Wildcats take to the road next week, starting with a nonconference matchup at Kutztown on Tuesday. They follow with their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Saturday at Felician.
