RINDGE, N.H. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team opened its 2018 schedule at the Raven First Serve Invitational hosted by Franklin Pierce on Friday, falling to Grand Valley State, 3-0, and California (Pa.), 3-1, inside The Fieldhouse.
Set scores for the season opener against Grand Valley State were 25-12, 25-18, and 25-16.
Set scores against California (Pa.) 25-23, 16-25, 19-25, and 15-25.
Rebecca Rawlinson led the Wildcats against the Lakers putting down eight kills on 21 swings, leading the hitters with a .238 attack percentage. Mandy Behiels collected six kills while adding six digs. Miranda Shaw dished out nine assists while Jenna Brown led the defense with 14 digs in the opener. Jill Braunsberg led the team with one solo block and one block assist.
The team hit .050, putting down 22 kills with 17 errors. The Lakers hit .317 as a team with only 14 errors, led by Staci Brower's 12 kills.
The Wildcats bounced back in the opening set against the Vulcans in the nightcap on Friday, putting down 12 terminations to win the set, 25-23. But the Vulcans rebounded to take the next three sets for the match. The Wildcats' best set came in the second set against California, putting down nine kills with only three errors for a .240 attack percentage.
Behiels and Rawlinson led the Wildcats once again in the nightcap, each collecting nine kills. Rawlinson hit .190 for the match while Behiels hit .059. Rawlinson added six block assists to lead the defensive effort.
Newcomers Bailey Andrews and Caroline Wise had six kills each while Braunsberg dished out a team high 15 assists to go with 10 digs for a double-double.
As a team, the Wildcats hit .072 with 36 kills and 27 errors while the Vulcans hits .283 for the match with 51 kills and 17 errors.
The Wildcats close out the Raven First Serve Invitational on Saturday, playing against Texas A&M International and LIU Post. The first match begins at 12:00 p.m.
